To make our work at the Capitol lobbying on behalf of students effective, we need a database of stories that gives examples of the real life struggles that students are going through to attend school. We have good data on rising tuition and rising student loan debt, but we also need your stories to put a human face with the numbers.
Please take the time to tell us your story. It will only take you a few moments to fill out our legislative story form and those few moments will help out our work at the capitol immensely. We are looking for stories that answer the questions:
- Why are you going to school?
- What type of program are you in?
- What obstacles have you faced?
- What motivates you to continue?
To encourage more students to submit their stories, the MSCSA Cabinet has submitted their legislative stories. Click to read about what motivated each of them to go to school and what challenges they face in attending college:
Don't worry, your story won't be published on our website-we have just posted the Cabinet's stories for illustrative purposes. Your submission can be even more brief and informal.
Thank you for your help.

Governor Tim Pawlenty signed the bonding bill into law yesterday, but he issued several line-item vetoes, including $91 million in state obligation from projects within the MnSCU system. In total, 14 MnSCU projects were taken out of the final bill by the Governor.
In his veto letter to the legislature, the Governor pointed out that he warned that spending a billion dollars on projects was too much in difficult economic times and that he decided the bill needed to be cut down in overall size. Also, the Governor stated that he vetoed MnSCU projects to make state support for the University of Minnesota and the MnSCU system more equal.
Attached you will find a spreadsheet that compares the bill passed by the house and senate conference committee and those projects signed by the Governor. If you have questions regarding this issue, please do not hesitate to contact the MSCSA state office at 651-297-5877.

Today, the Senate Higher Education Committee released its proposal for funding of higher education institutions and programs. The bill mirrors many of the funding reductions and changes proposed by Governor Pawlenty, including a $10.4 million reduction to the MnSCU system base budget. Also included in the Senate legislation are reductions to the state work study program, child care grants, and some policy directives to the Office of Higher Education on how to deal with projected shortfalls in the state grant program. Unlike the Governor, the Senate did spare the state grant program from further reductions Also today, a new revenue forecast was released for the state. The new projection shows a slight improvement in the budget outlook for the current biennium as the new projected shortfall is $998 million, down from an estimated $1.2 billion in November of last year. While this is good news on the budget front, it will likely not change the budget reduction number for MnSCU as the federal maintenance of effort requirements prohibit the state from reducing higher education funding below 2006 levels. As always if you have questions regarding a legislative issue, please feel free to contact the MSCSA office at 651-297-5877. |
